Press Release: November 15, 2019

For immediate release,

The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte Elected Band Council (MBQ) has called a plebiscite vote on their proposed Cannabis Control Law to be held tomorrow November 16, 2019, at their Administrative Office at 24 Meadow Drive, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory from 9 am – 6 pm.

A campaign to vote against the proposed law has been organized. Band members of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte who are inclined to vote in the plebiscite are being encouraged to vote no online and to gather their family members, neighbours and friends to vote no as well. The law would allow Health Canada onto the territory to license and inspect Mohawk businesses which many Mohawks strongly oppose. The understanding is that this law will infringe on Mohawk sovereignty lead to further taxation of other businesses such as cigarette shops, gas stations, and restaurants. Opposition to the law has been widespread and near-unanimous at community meetings on the subject.
